“Look at me still talking, when there’s science to do”

Posting about the new Star Trek movie a few days ago reminded me of something that I hadn’t thought about in years:

I had no idea that Voyager 1 is still going strong.  Its original mission to study Jupiter and Saturn began a little over 31 years ago.  It is nearly 15 light hours from Earth, still responding to commands and returning information home.  Amazing machine.  Many of Voyager 1‘s onboard experiments are expected to be operational until about 2020, well after it is expected to pass through the heliopause.

Speaking of science: OMGWTFOCEAN!

OK, two things:

  1. I thought Will Smith killed all these bastards in Independence Day.
  2. Why the hell didn’t any of my high school biology teachers bring up stuff like this in class?  Between the different bizarre creatures found at depth in the oceans and octopus that shorts out lights and juggles hermit crabs when it gets bored, I’d have definitely gone into marine biology.
